Vessels For Blessings

The Rav Name: Rabbi Yitzchak Arad

our daughter (Dvorah bat rachel) has developed many health issues in the past year. We just had our mezuzot checked in March, but her health issues are getting more, her eyes and joints, and other organs are involved. my friend said there are rules we have to watch in the house to keep our mezuzot kosher. I do not know what are those rules. would you please guide me on the rules to follow at home, how to keep the mezuzot kosher. or what can we do to help her. How can I pray for her.

Shalom, we received your letter and before anything else we want you to know that we pray for your daughter, Devorah bat Rachel. May G-d send her a speedy recovery in all her limbs and organs and her whole body!

Following is an excerpt from a letter that the Lubavitcher Rebbe,  Rabbi Menachem Mendel Shneerson, wrote to someone who was in great need.

“You must strengthen your bitachon (trust) in G-d, who leads the entirety of creation without exception, that He will guard and shield you, and eventually bring you to a good standing, materially and spiritually.

“…In addition, one must have appropriate vessels to accommodate all these blessings.

“These vessels are Torah study and the performance of Mitzvot…”

(Igros Kodesh, Vol. 4, p. 172)

In other words, the act of trusting in G-d in itself can help bring salvation. Also, you ask which rules should be kept in order to ensure that the mezuzot remain kosher? Truthfully every Jew has the obligation to study Torah and keep all the mitzvot as much as he/she possibly can. Perhaps whoever told you about rules to be kept in the house was hinting that if you are keeping the beautiful mitzvah of mezuzah then the lifestyle you lead in the house should also be kosher, perhaps you can keep a kosher kitchen if you do not already do so, and/or keep the laws of family purity or of Shabbatif you do not already. It is important to establish a connection with a competent orthodox Rabbi in your vicinity who can guide you as to how to upgrade your mitzvah observance to make a vessel for blessing. Just as a farmer prays for rain after he ploughs the field and sows seeds, so we request G-d’s blessings but show Him that we are willingly fulfilling His holy will as expressed in the commandments He gave us. The commandments of the Torah are our instruction manual, and the number of commandments corresponds to the number of organs, limbs and sinews in our bodies!

You can go into the website called Igrot Kodesh (of the Lubavitcher Rebbe) and it explains how to get a blessing through the books of the Rebbe’s holy letters. Regarding instruction in keeping the Mitzvot or adding on Mitzvot, if you do not know of a competent orthodox Rabbi you can consult with, look up the Chabad house closest to you and the Chabad representative will be able to offer assistance or refer you to someone who can.

By the way you mentioned that your Mezuzot have been checked, but if a Rabbi has not seen your home, it could be that there is a doorway that still needs a mezuzah to be affixed or even that there is a mezuzah in a place there shouldn’t be. A competent Rabbi needs to check this. If there is a man in the family have his Tefillin been checked? Taking care of all these matters should help.

Is there someone with whom you have been in conflict that you could reach out to in order to make peace with? Keeping the Mitzvah of loving your fellow is definitely a vessel for blessing as well.

It is worthwhile having a Tzedaka box next to your daughter and have her put a coin in every day if she can, or have someone do it on her behalf.

Again,  we wish her a complete and speedy recovery and await good news!

Addendum:

In serious health matters the Lubavitcher Rebbe advised consulting more doctors. If you have consulted with several experts go by the majority. If you have only consulted one or two, seek out another expert until you have at least three expert opinions. There’s blessing also in making these efforts!

Please let us know the progress!
