Unveiling the Matzeiva (Tombstone)

The Rav Name: Rabbi Yitzchak Arad

Is it halachic to have a rabbi present at an unveiling or is it ok just family?

Shalom and thank you for your question! You wish to know if a Rabbi is needed to preside over the unveiling of a tombstone. It is not necessary, but could be beneficial, depending on the circumstances. If there is a minyan present, (ten male Jews over thirteen years of age,) the Kaddish prayer should be recited, as well as mishnayot for the soul of the departed. If the people present know how to do this, then a Rabbi does not have to be there. There is also the option of a Rabbi providing guidance beforehand.

It is always a good idea to have a connection with a competent orthodox Rabbi who can guide you in life cycle events as well as Jewish law and outlook in everyday life.

It is admirable that you are paying tribute to the deceased by taking the appropriate care of the burial, tombstone etc. Additionally, it is very beneficial to the soul of the the deceased that his/her loved ones carry out the commandments of the Torah, and study it.
