Regarding returning home on Shabbat or Yom Tov, is it permissible to return home when the purpose of the trip has been accomplished?

There is no room for leniency here, unless the driving will be done by a non-Jew. If a Jew drives even if he would normally be driving anyway, it is forbidden. If we would be speaking about a surgeon who must operate on that Shabbat or Chag, who might not agree to go on that mission unless he/she would be allowed to return on the same day, he/she would be allowed to return.
