Shalom and thank you for turning to us. The Sages teach us that when someone is sick it is important to get advice from a pious Torah scholar and leader.

The Lubavitcher Rebbe gives guidelines for what to do in such situations.

Firstly, you mention the opinions of two doctors. It is recommended to get a third opinion. In this way, you will probably have two who are for the surgery or two against,  and you can go according to the majority. (If you have only two opinions there is no majority.)

Next, contact your local Chabad house and ask them to help you get your Mezuzot checked. Mezuzot are a protection. We cannot promise miracles, but there are many stories of people’s lives changing for the better when this Mitzvah has been taken care of. (According to Jewish law the Mezuzot must be checked at least twice in seven years, and preferably every year before Rosh Hashanah, and a Rabbi needs to see your house in order to see which doorways and how many doorways need Mezuzot.)

Does your husband have Tefillin? These also need to be checked for kashrut and your nearest Chabad house can help you with that also. (Tefillin and Mezuzot can be originally kosher but weather changes and other things can affect them and cause them to become ‘pasul’, not kosher.)

Finally, you can ask for a special blessing, a bracha, from the Lubavitcher Rebbe by going to the website ‘Igrot Kodesh.’

To get a blessing you just need to write your request with your husband’s Jewish name and his mother’s Jewish name, like:

Avraham ben Sarah.

It is also recommended to make a good resolution, like that your husband will put on Tefillin on weekdays when he is well enough, or that you will light Shabbat candles before sunset on Fridays, or imrove your kashrut, or give some extra money to charity… Making a good resolution is liking ploughing a field so the rain can be absorbed and help the seeds to grow. It gives you extra merit in G-d’s eyes so to speak, and draws down blessing.

Doing all the above is also showing your trust in G-d, and this in itself is also a merit which draws down blessing.

We at the Da’at website also give you our best wishes and pray that your husband has a Refuah Shleima! May he have a complete and speedy recovery!
