Hi Rabbi,About Amalek and doubt

Hi Rabbi,
About Amalek and doubt, and that it spells out “the work of a monkey”; would you make the direct connection between this and evolution? Since evolution may cause doubt?
Thanks a lot
Tal

Shalom and thank you for your question!
The Hebrew word for Amalek has the same numerical value as ‘safek’, the Hebrew word for doubt. According to the Torah a Jewish person has a good inclination and an evil one. Every given moment is a moment of free choice between good and evil. At any given point in time one can succumb to a negative thought, which can bring about negative speech or deed, or – we can use our free choice to choose to replace the negative thought with a positive one. Doubt is in the category of a negative thought, in the sense that it is something that keeps knocking on our door, wanting to be allowed into our consciousness. Doubt about what we believe in or what to eat for breakfast or whether we chose the right partner in business or the home… It’s endless. At every moment we can utilize the tools of free choice and choose to strengthen ourselves in our beliefs, and in our beliefs about the decisions we have made, and our ability to make wise choices in the future,, with the help of good friends and mentors.

Learning Torah and increasing our observance of the Mitzvot can help us make headway with the above.

Regarding the theory of evolution, that is exactly what it is, a theory.

Much has been said and written to show that there is no contradiction between Torah and science. A few weeks ago the Torah portion was Genesis, (Bereishit), which discusses the creation of the world, where it says, ‘In the beginning G-d created’.

May we all be successful in overcoming our internal little Amalek that wishes us to doubt ourselves and thus become sad, and by overcoming in this manner, we can bring the world closer to its ultimate goal of Redemption.
