Is it necessary according to Chabad custom to use separate glasses (made of glass and for hot drinks) for meat and for dairy?
There is a story about the Alter Rebbe at the time he was a student of the Maggid of Mezeritch. He wished to use a glass for the Pesach Seder, and he koshered it. The Maggid sensed that the glass had been koshered for Pesach and didn’t allow the Alter Rebbe to use it.
Some Ashkenazi authorities also allow using a glass for both meat and dairy, since the drink is transferred to it from the utensil in which it was heated, which means that it is a secondary degree of heat and not a primary one. So someone who does this has opinions to rely on, but Chabad custom is to be stringent.
If the utensil is made of heatproof glass, such as Duralex, by all opinions, it is not permitted to be used for both meat and dairy.
