Blowing Shofar in an unclean place
Is it permissible to blow the Shofar in a prison where there is excrement and urine? Also, is it permissible to blow Shofar in a geriatric ward where the residents have uncleanliness on their bodies?
Answer: In a case of great need one may perform a Mitzvah in a place which is dirty and with a body which is dirty, however the blessing may be said only with a clean body, and in a place which is free of excrement, urine, and bad odor. If all of the people who are present to perform the Mitzvah are in a place which is unclean, or their bodies are unclean, a blessing should not be said even outside for them to answer and say Amen, but the Mitzvah should be performed without a blessing.
