Guests on Rosh Hashanah

Shalom Da’at Institute Rabbis,

I enjoyed hearing the classes on your website a lot. I have a small question and would appreciate if you can answer. Due to the fact that Rosh HaShanah is a very serious day, should we invite guests who joke and laugh a lot, or is it preferable to have the meals without guests, in a serious manner.

Thank you very much.

It is a great mitzvah to invite guests, as the rabbis in the Talmud maintain—it is even greater then receiving the Shechina (the Divine Presence)! So that will definitely add to one’s merits on this auspicious day.

Bottom line:

You should invite the guests, yet if necessary, you should explain to the guests the seriousness of the day and be proactive about the holiday meals retaining their holy atmosphere. If that isn’t possible, and the meal is definitely going to get totally out of hand, it is best on Rosh Hashanah not to invite guests, provided they have somewhere else to eat.
